Nutritional food for infant brain development

Posted on 08-14-2014

One of the most critical issues a parent needs to consider for their infant is providing their child with the right nutrition in the form of a balanced diet. Whether your infant is at home or in day care, their diet should be focused on healthy brain development at this critical stage. Here are some of the foods that your infant should be receiving to encourage healthy brain development:

Breast milk

Studies have shown that breast milk contains around 380 – 400 nutrients that may not be available from baby formula. Mother’s milk, for example, contains certain fats that aid the child in building myelin. Myelin is the insulation covering the nerves that is vital for the nervous system to function properly. Also, your breast milk is perfectly suited to your particular child’s needs, whereas, scientifically formulated baby formula is not specific to your child.

Incorporate Iron into your baby’s diet

Ensuring that your infant gets enough iron in his diet is critical. A lack of iron during infancy can lead to conditions such as anemia. Anemia can develop when the blood lacks enough red blood cells. It is these cells which bind oxygen.

Infant cereals

Once your baby has reached the age of about six months, or when your pediatrician recommends it, you can start incorporating infant cereals into their diet. There are a number infant cereals available on the market today, and most of them are rich in iron and other important nutrients.
